Editor's Foreword (Issue II)

The second issue of students’ journal “Philology” includes 8 articles focusing on linguistic and literary studies and one literary sketch.

Nino Papunashvili’s article “Gender Bias Reflected in Monolingual Dictionaries and Its Transformation Over Time” presents gender related attitudes and their reflection in the definitions of words and their examples. The article contains an in-depth analysis, highlighting the role of culture, societal norms and lexicography in shaping the perception of gender-marked terms.

The article “The Use of Language for Creating Gendered Advertisements“ by Mariam Ioramishvili studies verbal and visual information in gendered advertisements. The author demonstrates how different advertising companies employ language for creating and presenting specific gender stereotypes.
 

Anna Barateli’s study “Comparative Analysis of Stylistic Devices of Vazha-Pshavela’s “Cosmopolitanism and Patriotism” and its English translation“ focuses on a comparative analysis of different stylistic devices. The author explores the degree of change in stylistic features, emphasizes how language can determine and change the structure and content of the translation.

In the article “Etymological and Semantic Analysis of the English adjective “lazy” and Its Georgian Correlate“, Mariam Dodashvili explores the above-mentioned lexical item and its Georgian equivalent, their meanings, as well as the similarities and differences regarding the usage. The author employs different linguistic theories, including Conceptual Metaphor Theory and the theory of semantic fields.

Nino Revazashvili’s paper “Lexicographical Evolution: Tracing the Semantic Development of Gender-related Terminology in English Dictionaries“ studies 5 gendered terms – equality, discrimination, patriarchy, feminism and mysogyny - and their semantic evolution in different dictionaries and a specialized resource.

In her work, “Stylistic Analysis of Mary Shelley’s “The Mortal Immortal”, Mariam Merebashvili presents an extensive analysis of different stylistic devices, their realization in the literary work and the role through the lense of the Gothic literature.

Anano Endeladze’s paper “ "Wonder" and ,,სასწაული”: Etymology and Linguocultural Parallels in English and Georgian“ focuses on etymology, semantic evolution, similarities and differrences concerning the usage of the lexical items.

In the article  “Love and Illusion in Iris Murdoch’s novel “The Black Prince”“, Tsotne Ghughunishvili explores the philosophy of Iris Murdoc, the role of illusion and the manner of its transformation into psycological and moral condition.

The second issue also includes Lasha Chachua’s literary sketch “The Call of the Forest”.
