Abstract

The current study aims to explore the changes in the Georgian Language caused by COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 has impacted various facets of human existence (The British Academy, 2021), including language. The consequences of the pandemic prompt an exploration of the shifts occurring in the Georgian language since 2020. The crisis has led to the creation of numerous new terms in response to the coronavirus, now integrated into our daily lexicon. The research aims to investigate the societal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Georgian language and the enduring effects of COVID-19 on the processing of the Georgian language.

The study employs theoretical frameworks that explore the creation of new concepts, semantic shifts in existing words, the rise of neologisms, and the enrichment of dictionaries with COVID-19-related terminology. The dynamic nature of language becomes evident, reflecting society's adaptability and response to global challenges.

Current study emphasizes the role of societal shifts, including lockdowns and social distancing, in shaping linguistic expressions and communication patterns. Additionally, we discuss the expansion of specific words and phrases influenced by the pandemic. Investigating the enduring repercussions of COVID-19 on the processing of the Georgian language, It is valuable to determine if the linguistic changes brought about by the pandemic continue to exist over an extended period.

Examining the prevalence of words and phrases introduced by the pandemic, the analysis incorporates data from questionnaires and CMC (Computer Mediated Communication) to provide insights into linguistic trends influenced by the pandemic. The research highlights the adaptability of the Georgian language to societal changes and the incorporation of new concepts in response to unprecedented global events.

Methodologies such as CMC and online questionnaires were employed, emphasizing the role of social media in the adoption of new words. The results underscore the broader societal changes induced by COVID-19 and the corresponding linguistic shifts, as acknowledged by respondents.

The study reveals a profound and lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Georgian language. Examining linguistic expressions and communication patterns, the research emphasizes the emergence of neologisms related to the pandemic. These linguistic innovations are often borrowed from the English language because it is an international language.

The results of the online questionnaire revealed that COVID-19 has brought about changes not only in various fields like economics, politics, and health care, but also in linguistics. The research highlights the lasting influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Georgian language.
